    I have suffered from IBS for years now. I get symptoms such as nausea too & had a 'metabolic typing' test done at a natural therapist 6 months ago. When you find out from the test what 'body 'type' you are, you are given digestive enzymes called enzigest. With IBS people often suffer from allergies/sensitivities which irritate the bowel & if you take enzymes with your foods, it allows your body to digest it a LOT better.     I suffer from chronic IBS so I can sympathize with you. First off you need to keep a diary of the foods that you know kick off your IBS, mostly foods that include all kinds of dairy (cheese, ice cream etc) and bread products as in my case. A trip to your Doctor is in order to make sure the diagnosis is correct as there are a number of other problems that could be IBS but turn out to be something like Chrons Disease. Stress may trigger symptoms in people with IBS. Talk to your family doctor about ways to deal with stress, such as exercise, relaxation training or meditation. He or she may have some suggestions or may refer you to someone who can give you some ideas. Your doctor may also suggest that you talk to a counselor about things that are bothering you. There is no cure for IBS. However, if you're having bad symptoms, your doctor may prescribe medicine to help you manage or lessen your symptoms. For example, antispasmodic medicines may be prescribed to reduce cramping if your main symptom is pain. Hyoscyamine (some brand names: Anaspaz, Cystospaz, Levsin) and dicyclomine (some brand names: Bentyl, Di-Spaz) help relax the spasms in the colon. Heating pads and hot baths can also be comforting. When diahorrea is a frequent problem, medicine such as loperamide (brand name: Imodium) may help. Eat a varied healthy diet and avoid foods high in fat. Drink plenty of water.     Firstly I agree with most of what your first respondent suggests, its a good summary - I hope this supplements it and helps you: I disagree that there is 'no cure' for IBS, except that I do think that so called 'modern' (allopathic) medicine does NOT have a 'cure'. IBS is not a disease it is a "symptom" of an unbalanced lifestyle. This may relate to things that cause emotional/psychological 'stresses' to the sytem as much as 'physical' stresses. IBS cannot be fully overcome without addressing the particular cause of 'your' problems and these will be different for you than they are for another person. This means you need to look at your own 'lifestyle'. What causes you stress, and what have you done to 'unbalance' your physical system. For many people (if not almost all) on a Western diet (like in the UK & US) we have usually decimated our normal healthy gut bacteria through consuming too many chemical laden foods, too much processed food, and using anti-biotics too liberally. This has led to most of us having an overgrowth of 'bad' bacteria in our guts, and an internal environment that not only is pre-disposed to problems like IBS, but also to other more 'serious' illness. It also means we do not receive all the true nourishment we should get from our diet (even if it is NOW a realtively healthy one!). Things cannot improve unless we make an effort to resestablish a healthy gut environment -- that said read on: My b/f posted this answer to a similar question, now with a few additions, a few days ago -- quote: I have had IBS fro many years.
