    My best friend has Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and it drives her mad. She can't eat most foods and is constantly either bloated or in pain, usually both. She doesn't eat dairy products, gluten or wheat but it's still really intense. Any advice/cures? She's not self-diagnosed but each specialist or GP she's been to has just told her not to eat the foods she doesn't already eat. It's been a useless exercise for her to go to the doctors/hospital.

    There is no easy cure although some things do help with symptoms in some people - take a look at the webpage below: Quote: Your GP will be able to advise you about what your recommended fibre intake should be. It is often found in processed, or recooked, foods. •Limit fresh fruit to three portions (80 g each) a day; a suitable portion would be half a grapefruit, or one apple. •If you have diarrhoea, avoid sorbitol, which is an artificial sweetener that is found in sugar-free sweets (including chewing gum) and drinks, and in some diabetic and slimming products. •If you have wind and bloating, consider increasing your intake of oats, for example, oat-based breakfast cereal, or porridge, and linseeds (up to one tablespoon a day).

    Is she self diagnosed? If yes, please go to a specialist as there are other disorders with similar symptoms. IBS can be a stress related disorder and changing her diet will not change the outcome. If stress is an indicator here then I would strongly suggest yoga to strengthen the body and meditation practise to calm the nerves and balance the inner being. If this IBS is caused by food intolerance then your doctor can organise a test to find out what are the intolerances. as an alernative make a food diary and slowly work out what does not cause problems and what does. good luck I hope the above is of some help
