Some people with IBS find that increasing the amount of dietary fibre and reducing caffeine helps. The word syndrome means a group of symptoms. IBS is a syndrome because it can cause several symptoms. For example, IBS causes cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. Most people can control their symptoms with diet, stress management, and prescribed medications. For some people, however, IBS can be disabling. They may be unable to work, attend social events, or even travel short distances. In many cases, you can control irritable bowel syndrome by managing your diet, lifestyle and stress. Colon motility (contraction of intestinal muscles and movement of its contents) is controlled by nerves and hormones and by electrical activity in the colon muscle. IBS should not be confused with colitis or other inflammatory diseases of the intestinal tract and IBS is not limited to the colon. In some individuals, IBS may have an acute onset and develop after an infectious illness characterised by two or more of the following: fever , vomiting , acute diarrhea , positive stool culture. This post-infective syndrome has consequently been termed "post-infectious IBS" and is acute onset Rome II criteria positive. This condition is more homogenous, being mostly IBS-D and is drawing much clinical investigation. While the exact cause of IBS is unknown. In people with this problem the nerves lining the colon are thought to be more sensitive than normal to bowel contractions and the passage of gas and fluid, causing pain and cramping. The nerves that control the muscles in the gut may overreact to stimuli like gas or the passage of food following a meal. This may cause painful spasms and contractions that speed or slow the passage of stool through the colon, resulting in diarrhea or constipation. Together, these actions create a painful cycle. Symptoms are often numerous and vague. In some women, having a bowel movement will often relieve the pain.Reading is a habit that has to be cultivated from a small age. I've eliminated milk and mostly any dairy, fried foods, sugar for the most part, pop, alcohol, potato chips, spicy food, rice, pasta and bread. Most recently I'm eliminating flour. But my best friend for the last couple of years has been Imodium Quick Dissolve tablets. I don't ever leave home without them. I just have to make sure I don't overdo it. If I ever become immune to the wonder drug I am gonna be a real mess!'

chew your food properly. The enzymes that break down food can only break down the food it touches. If you swallow big pieces, it won't digest properly. Also keep a journal of the foods you eat. You can find certain foods may trigger it, try to avoid those foods. Also exercise.

There is no cure for IBS. I have had it for years and tried so many medications but to no avial, but perhaps thats just me. I do have Weetabix every morning now which has really helped me but I still get it every few days but not to the extent I have in the past. Popular treatments are: Peppermint oil capsules, Aloe Vera Juice, Buscupan, Spasmodal, Merbentyl. Things from the health shop are just as beneficial as meds so try giving them ago. Prunes are good for constipation especially if you have them with yoghurt. Try not to eat anything that it seedy or pippy ie, rasberrys or buns with seeds on, strawberrys, as these do not get broken down properly and will just aggrevate your bowels. Hope this helps.

hi eating a healthy diet, dont go too long without food as you get full of wind, dont over eat as that can make you feel worse, try not to get stressed about things, easier said than done. i think you can learn if you listen to your own body to control the symptoms of ibs, everyone is different so what works for someone else may not work for you, good luck

I've had IBS for 12 years now, so i've tried many different medications. Stay away from the internet "miracle cures" they just get your hopes up and let you down. It's difficult living with IBS, but i'll tell you what helped me, like i said i've had it for 12 years now so i've had time to adjust. 1) Eliminate fried foods (if it's too hard, do it slowly, ease off on all fried foods it'll help IMMENSLY) ** elminate coffee and carbonated bevareages (they're unhealthy anyways, and they cause bowel flare ups) 2) Soluble fiber. This is very important. Many people feel that soluble fiber is a laxative. THis is not true. If you have IBS with diarrhea, fiber supplements will help add Bulk, making bowel movements less irritating, and more full. If you have consipation, fiber will help coat the walls of the intestines and make it easier to have a bowel movement. (citrucel and metamucil are two very popular ones) 3) This is something i just started doing recently that i found to be reallly really helpful. There is an amino acid called L-Glutamine. It's best to take in powder form. I found that after a week of supplementing with this, that i felt incredibly better. I had surgery on my tonsils, and i had to stop taking all supplements, and when i stopped taking it, i noticed that my symptoms worsened. Search online for Glutamine AND IBS, and do some reading about people who have benefited from GLUTAMINE 4) you need to workout/exercise. Stress was the biggest trigger for my IBS, it killed me. I began to workout as much as i could in a week. I was a happier person because i could control my stress, and my IBS began to improve. When i lost some weight (mostly fat) i began to feel better overall, and my improved spirits helped to deal with IBS. 5) If you have the willpower, reallly take the time to alter your diet. Since i've been diagnosed 12 years ago, i've always thought of IBS as an excuse to eat healthy. If you see something unhealthy (fried foods, sugary foods, Carbonated beverages, etc) jsut remeber what symptoms you're going to have, remember how bad you will feel, and then eat something healthier instead. There is no cure for IBS, so time to start getting comfortable with it, you'll learn as you go ways to help control it, but try what i suggested. I'm not a doctor, but I just suggest through experience.
